An Old Citizen Gone – Isaac Matkins, one of the oldest citizens of Putnam County departed this life at his residence in this place on Friday morning last, May 3d, 1861. Mr. Matkins was 63 years of age at the time of his death. He became a citizen of Putnam County in 1821. Some 40 years ago emigrating from the state of North Caroline, he settled on his old farm four miles west of Greencastle, where for a series of year, by the practice of industry and economy, he continued to increase in wealth and affluence – he was a devout Christian – a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church for a long series of years, and finally died triumphing in the hopes of a blessed immortality. He leaves a wife and some 7 or 8 children, mostly grown in comfortable circumstances, besides numerous acquaintances to regret his departure from among them. - kz
